A widow’s pension and personal protection plan restored.

The story is told in Luke 7:11-17 of Jesus going to a certain city called Nain. As He approached the city there was a cortege carrying the only son of a widow, with her following and crying.

Her son had died and the funeral procession was slowly making its way to bury the dead man outside the city walls. She was understandably filled with grief, feeling the deep sense of loss, clearly vulnerable, helpless and hopeless.

From mad existence to purposeful living

Our world today is filled with people who suffer from various forms of psychosis and mental disorder. Jesus’ day was no exception.

There is a powerfully moving story in the gospel which illustrates what Jesus did and desires to do in lives today. The story is recorded in all three Synoptic Gospels – Matthew 8:28 34, Mark 5:1-20 and Luke 8:26-39. Jesus had crossed over the lake with his disciples, and the first sight that met him was a man possessed by unclean spirits. That man bore all the hallmarks of madness. He lived in the graveyard; he was violent, he self-harmed; was often chained but so powerful was he that he would break the chains in pieces, crying out night and day in his torment. His was a terrible story.

Jabez, the man who prayed

There are many people who would acknowledge that often reading through the Old Testament and the seemingly genealogies feel like torture, even at the best of times. Yet in the midst of the list of names a few surprises can spring out. Such is the case with the two verses that talk about a man by the name of Jabez.

Fresh start, new beginnings

True conversion – leaving the old life behind

One of the most powerful and touching narratives in the Old Testament concerns a young woman from the land of Moab who had married one of the sons of a man called Elimelech from Bethlehem, Judah. In the process of time, the woman’s father-in-law, brother-in-law and husband all died tragically. This caused the woman’s mother-in-law, Naomi, to set out to return to her homeland, the town of Bethlehem.
