Purpose and intent

(Genesis 1:3,6,9,11,14,21,22,24,26)

True leadership is rooted in purpose; clarity of purpose. That is because purpose sets the end point and invariably defines the nature of the journey.

Anyone who claims to be a leader and isn’t purposeful is no leader at all. That person is simply not leading. To have a purpose is to have a goal, an aim, end point or an outcome in mind. As we read through the whole of the creation story we see that God was purposeful and intentional. He was very deliberate in terms of all that He wanted to accomplish, in terms of the creation of land mass, the separation of the waters, the two great lights, the creation of all the living creatures and of course mankind.

God was very ordered and intentional in what He was doing. He knew how He wanted to populate the earth, how He wanted to structure the earth. So it should be with every leader.

One of the reasons why leaders fail or have no followers is that they are not intentional or purposeful, or the fact that the people they are leading cannot see their purpose. The latter is a secondary issue which can be corrected through more effective communication. However, the very absence of a clear purpose spells doom for a leader.

As an example, Jesus was very purposeful. We read that upon entering the synagogue He took up the Torah, the Jewish holy book, and read very clearly what some call His mission statement or manifesto (Luke 4: 18-19). In doing so He announced His life’s purpose and intent. So it should be with every leader. Be clear about your purpose; be clear about your intent.
